Canyonlands National Park
The Needles, and whether the drive is worth it
Seventy four miles south of Moab, ninety minutes each way, and a completely different park from Island in the Sky. Instead of looking down into canyons you walk among sandstone spires. That drive is the whole decision.

The short answer
The Needles is a full day, minimum. Ninety minutes of driving each way before you walk a step, which is why every guided trip here is a day trip and several set a minimum age of ten.
Go if walking is the point of your day, or you want Chesler Park, Druid Arch or Elephant Hill. If you mainly want big views for little effort, Island in the Sky gives you more for a third of the driving.
The trade
Three hours in a vehicle, and what you get for it
Being straightforward about this saves people a wasted day. A Needles trip is roughly three hours of driving inside an eight hour day. That leaves four or five hours in the district, which is enough for a real walk but not for two.
Go to the Needles
If this sounds like you
- Walking is the point of your day rather than the price of the view
- You want a trail network rather than a viewpoint
- Chesler Park, Druid Arch or Elephant Canyon are on your list
- You have a spare full day and do not mind long drives
- You want somewhere noticeably quieter than Arches
Choose Island in the Sky
If this sounds more like you
- You have half a day rather than a full one
- Big views for little walking is what you came for
- Somebody in the group tires easily
- You want Mesa Arch or Grand View Point
- Forty minutes each way suits you better than ninety

The road itself
Elephant Hill is not a shortcut
Elephant Hill is one of the more demanding four wheel drive routes in Utah, and it is the access for Chesler Park by vehicle. Steep, loose, with tight switchbacks that require reversing to get around.
This matters because a hire car cannot do it, and neither can most stock SUVs without experience behind the wheel. NAVTEC crossing Elephant Hill at $348 is selling you the road as much as the destination.
The paved road to the Needles visitor centre and the main trailheads is fine in any vehicle. Elephant Hill and the backcountry routes beyond it are a different proposition entirely, and are where people get into trouble with rental vehicles and no recovery gear.
On foot
Chesler Park and Druid Arch
The Needles has the best day hiking in Canyonlands, and these are the two names you will see most.
- Chesler Park
- About 11 miloop, full day
- Druid Arch
- About 11 mireturn, full day
- Drive from Moab
- 74 miabout 90 min
- Minimum age
- 10on several tours
Both are genuine full day walks, and both are why people come here rather than to Island in the Sky. Elephant Canyon links them, so guided trips often combine parts of each rather than committing to one full loop.
Distances vary by route and trailhead, so treat those figures as the common versions rather than the only ones. Your operator will tell you exactly what they are walking.
Logistics
Planning a Needles day
- Entry is $30 per vehicle for seven days, or $55 for the annual pass covering Canyonlands, Arches, Natural Bridges and Hovenweep.
- No timed entry, here or anywhere in Canyonlands. That system only ever applied to Arches and ended there for 2026.
- Start early. A dawn departure from Moab makes the difference between walking in the morning and walking in the afternoon heat.
- Carry all your water. Two to three litres per person minimum, four or more for a full day on the trails.
- Check minimum ages before booking with children. Adrift set ten on the Needles day trip.
Common questions
Questions
Is the Needles district worth the drive from Moab?
If walking is the point of your day, yes. It has the best day hiking in Canyonlands and is noticeably quieter than Arches. If you mainly want big views for little effort, Island in the Sky gives you more for a third of the driving at about forty minutes each way.
How far is the Needles from Moab?
Seventy four miles south, roughly ninety minutes each way on pavement. That three hour round trip is why every guided Needles trip is a full day.
How much does a Needles tour cost?
From $281 per adult for an eight hour day trip with Adrift Adventures, with youth at $271 and a minimum age of ten. NAVTEC Expeditions run Chesler Park and Horse Canyon at $348, both crossing Elephant Hill. Private trips are on enquiry.
Can I drive to the Needles in a rental car?
To the visitor centre and the main trailheads, yes, the approach is paved. Elephant Hill and the backcountry routes beyond it are demanding four wheel drive with tight switchbacks that require reversing, and are not suitable for a hire car.
What is the best hike in the Needles?
Chesler Park and Druid Arch are the two most walked, both around eleven miles and both full day outings. Elephant Canyon links them, so guided trips often walk parts of each rather than committing to one complete loop.
Can children go to the Needles?
Several operators set a minimum age of ten, including Adrift on the Needles day trip. Beyond the rule, it is a long day with three hours of driving and a substantial walk, which suits older children better than young ones.
