Arches and Canyonlands

Half day tours, for one free morning

The most common situation in Moab is a single spare half day between a drive in and a drive out. Twelve guided trips fit that window, from three hours to five, and they differ more than the prices suggest.

The short answer

What a half day buys you

Three to five hours, one park, and typically four or five stops. Prices run $114 to $199 per person on a shared departure, or from about $631 for a private vehicle.

The single most useful thing to compare is not price but group size. Mild to Wild run the same Arches route at $114 with up to twelve guests or $199 capped at six. On a busy October morning those are different days.

Wanted a hike instead?

This page is vehicle based park tours: four or five stops with a short walk at each, roughly a mile and a half on foot across a morning. If you would rather be walking than riding, guided half day hikes run two to six hours on foot from $100 per person. Compare half day guided hikes.

Narrowing it

Which tour suits you

Cheapest way in

Mild to Wild, $114

Four hours, all ages, air conditioned van, park entry included. Up to twelve guests. The best value on this page by a clear margin if you do not mind a larger group.

Shortest

Moab In A Day sunset, 3 hours

Three hours at $139, minimum two guests. If your window is genuinely tight, or a longer trip is more than somebody in the group wants, this is the one.

Most walking

Moab In A Day walking tour, 5 hours

Two to three miles on foot at $199. More time out of the vehicle than any other half day here, and the answer if the word tour puts you off.

Biggest view

Adrift Canyonlands, $155

Four and a half hours at Island in the Sky with under a mile of walking. The most view per step of anything on this page.

Timing

Morning or afternoon

Most operators run a morning and an afternoon departure of the same trip, and the choice matters more here than in most places.

  • Morning is cooler, quieter at the trailheads and better for anyone who tires in heat. From May to September it is the clear pick.
  • Afternoon and sunset gives you the light. Red rock does its best work in the last two hours of the day, and photographers plan around it.
  • The hard window is 10am to 5pm in summer, which the National Park Service advises avoiding for strenuous activity. A vehicle based tour is manageable then, but you will spend the stops looking for shade.
  • Moab Tourism Center run their sunset departure about four hours before sunset, so the timing shifts through the year.

The maths

When private costs about the same

Shared departures charge per seat. Private trips charge for the vehicle. That means the per person cost of private falls as your group grows, and the crossover happens sooner than people expect.

Two people, shared
About $228Mild to Wild
Four people, shared
About $456Mild to Wild
Four people, private
About $631Wild West Voyages
Per head, private at 4
About $158plus flexibility

Below four people a shared departure is almost always cheaper. At four they land close together and private wins on flexibility. Above four, private is usually both cheaper per head and a better day.

Private also removes the two things people complain about most: a fixed clock and a group whose pace is not yours.

Common questions

Questions

How long is a half day tour in Moab?

Three to five hours. Moab In A Day run the shortest at three hours, most operators run four, and Moab In A Day's walking focused Arches tour runs five. Add travel from your accommodation to the meeting point.

What is the cheapest half day tour in Moab?

Mild to Wild's four hour Arches half day at $114 for adults and $99 for youth, with park entry included. The trade is group size, since they take up to twelve guests unless you pay $199 for the version capped at six.

Can I do Arches and Canyonlands in a half day?

No. Both parks in one trip is a full day of eight hours, and even then it covers Island in the Sky only rather than all of Canyonlands. A half day means one park.

How much walking is on a half day tour?

Usually one to two miles across four or five short stops. Adrift's Canyonlands half day and Moab In A Day's sunset tour are under a mile. Moab In A Day's walking tour is the most on foot at two to three miles.

Is a morning or afternoon tour better in Moab?

Morning is cooler and quieter, and from May to September it is the clear choice. Afternoon and sunset departures give you better light, which is why photographers prefer them. The National Park Service advises avoiding strenuous activity between 10am and 5pm in the hot months.

Is a private half day tour worth the extra?

It depends on group size. Below four people a shared departure is cheaper. At four they cost about the same per head, and private adds a pace that is yours and no fixed clock. Above four, private is usually cheaper per person as well as better.
