Off season

Moab in winter, when the parks empty out

Arches recorded 31,870 recreation visits in January 2025 and 193,448 in May. That is the same park with about one sixth of the people, the same arches, and a good deal more room to stand in front of them. Here is what winter costs you and what it gives back.

Sandstone fins and juniper framed by red rock, with snow on distant mountains under a blue sky
Snowcapped mountains appear behind the fins.

The short answer

The short version

Cold but manageable. January averages a high of 43°F and a low of 20°F. December and February sit either side of that. The sun is low, the air is dry and the middle of the day is comfortable walking weather.

Most things still run. Park tours operate year round, and Medieval Chamber is the canyoneering route that runs all winter. The real changes are daylight, ice on slickrock and shorter operator schedules.

Numbers

What winter actually feels like

Moab average monthly temperatures, 30 year averages
MonthAverage highAverage lowWhat it means
November56°F30°FExcellent walking weather, short days
December44°F21°FCold mornings, pleasant midday sun
January43°F20°FThe coldest month and the quietest
February51°F26°FWarming, and canyoneering returns
March63°F35°FThe season starting, still uncrowded

30 year averages for 1991 to 2020. Nights below 0°F happen roughly once a year on average.

Put those numbers next to July, which averages a high of 99°F with roughly half of July days reaching 100°F or more, and the comparison makes itself. Winter here is cold in the morning and pleasant by noon. The problem in Moab has never been the cold.

What the table does not show is the light. Low winter sun across red rock is the best photographic light of the year, and it lasts most of the day rather than twenty minutes at each end.

The real reason to come

How quiet it actually gets

This is the argument for a winter trip, and it is a large one.

Arches in January

Arches in May
193,448 visits2025
Canyonlands in January
9,900 visits2025
Canyonlands in May
120,667 visits2025

Arches receives about one sixth of its May traffic in January. Canyonlands receives about one twelfth. In practice that means car parking spaces at Delicate Arch, a Mesa Arch sunrise you are not queueing for, and guides who have time to talk.

It also means the operators are quieter, which usually translates into smaller groups on shared trips and more flexibility on private ones. If you have ever wanted a guide to yourself without paying a solo rate, January is when to ask.

Arches entry in winter

The National Park Service announced on 18 February 2026 that Arches would not run a timed entry reservation system for the 2026 season. Even in years when timed entry has applied, it has covered the busy months rather than the winter. Check the park's own page before travelling.

Practicalities

What the cold actually changes

  • Ice on slickrock. Snow melts in the sun and refreezes in the shade, and slickrock with ice on it has no grip at all. Two visitors died in falls on the Delicate Arch trail in late November 2019 in rain and snow. Carry traction devices, or book a guide who does.
  • Short days. Sunset in late December is mid afternoon. Plan shorter walks, start earlier than feels necessary, and carry a head torch.
  • Big daily swings. The National Park Service notes swings of more than 40°F in a day here. Dress in layers you can actually shed rather than one warm coat.
  • Water still matters. The air is very dry and you will not feel thirsty in the way you do in July. Carry and drink it anyway.
  • Some services reduce hours. Restaurants, shuttles and visitor centres run shorter winter schedules. Check before relying on one.
  • Roads are mostly fine. The paved park roads are maintained. Unpaved and four wheel drive routes are a different matter after snow or rain, which is one more argument for a guide with the right vehicle.

We do not run trips, own gear or employ guides, and no operator pays to appear here or to appear higher. Details below are from each company's own published material, checked September 2026. Full disclosure.

Common questions

Questions

Is Moab worth visiting in winter?

If you want space more than warmth, yes. Arches recorded 31,870 recreation visits in January 2025 against 193,448 in May, about one sixth of the traffic. January averages a high of 43°F and a low of 20°F, which is cold in the morning and comfortable walking weather by midday.

How cold does Moab get in winter?

January is the coldest month, averaging a high of 43°F and a low of 20°F on 30 year averages. December is similar at 44°F and 21°F, and February warms to 51°F and 26°F. Nights below 0°F happen roughly once a year.

Can you go canyoneering in Moab in winter?

Yes. Medieval Chamber runs year round and is the reliable winter route, with two rappels of ninety and a hundred feet about fifteen minutes from town, from $140 per person at four or more. Granary Canyon runs February to March, and Entrajo is April to September only.

Do Moab tours run in winter?

Park tours and guided hiking operate year round, with earlier finishes because of the short daylight. Schedules thin out, which usually means smaller groups on shared trips and more flexibility on private ones. Confirm departures when you book.

Is the Delicate Arch trail safe in winter?

It carries a specific hazard that it does not have in summer. Snow melts and refreezes on the open slickrock slope and on the ledge near the top, where there is no handrail. Two visitors died in falls there in late November 2019 in rain and snow. Traction devices change the trip, as does a guide who carries them.

Are the Moab parks open in winter?

Yes, and the paved roads in Arches and Canyonlands are maintained through the season. Unpaved and four wheel drive routes can be impassable after snow or rain. Visitor centre hours are reduced, so check before relying on one.
