Group tours in Moab, and who can actually take you

Corporate days out, family reunions, wedding parties and school groups all hit the same wall in Moab: most operators here are small, and a group of fifteen does not fit in one vehicle. Here is every published capacity in town and how the pricing works once you pass four people.

The short answer

The short version

Moab operators are small by design. Published caps run from five guests at the tightest to twelve on the largest shared vehicle. A group of more than twelve means multiple vehicles and multiple guides.

Past four people, per vehicle pricing usually beats per seat pricing. Private vehicles start around $631 for up to four, with about $140 per extra guest.

We do not run trips, own gear or employ guides, and no operator pays to appear here or to appear higher. Details below are from each company's own published material, checked September 2026. Full disclosure.

The practical ceiling for a single vehicle in Moab is twelve, and most operators sit below it. A group of twenty is three vehicles and three guides, which is entirely doable and needs more notice than a group of four.

Why the caps are low

On a canyon trip, group size is not a comfort question. Everybody descends one rope at a time, so twelve people is mostly waiting. On a park tour, loading and unloading a full van at six stops costs real time. Small caps are a quality decision rather than a capacity limit.

The money

How group pricing actually works

Three pricing models operate in Moab and they behave differently as the group grows. Knowing which one you are buying is most of the negotiation.

Per seat

Park tours

You buy a place. The cost scales linearly, so twenty people costs twenty times one. Simple, and it never gets cheaper per head. $114 to $430 per person.

Per group

Most hiking and canyoneering

You buy the guide. The cost per head falls as the group grows, so four people often pay less each than two do. This is the standard model for Moab hiking. $100 to $350 per person.

Per vehicle

Private tours

You buy the trip. From about $631 for up to four with roughly $140 per extra guest, which means six people works out around $152 each. Best value for a group travelling together.

By group

What suits which kind of group

Corporate days out

Shared experience, mixed fitness

A four wheel drive day or a park tour keeps everybody together regardless of fitness, which a hike does not. NAVTEC run backcountry days from $198 to $398 per person. Split a large group across vehicles and give each one the same itinerary so the day converges at lunch.

Family reunions

Wide age range

Minimum ages are the constraint. Adrift set seven on the Delicate Arch day and ten on the Needles. Canyoneering runs from eight upward depending on route. A vehicle based park day accommodates the widest spread of ages and abilities.

Wedding parties

Timing and reliability

Book well ahead, avoid canyoneering the day before the wedding because weather cancellations are real, and confirm the return time in writing. A half day tour leaves the afternoon intact.

School and youth groups

Ratios and ages

Group caps of five and six per guide work in your favour here. Confirm minimum ages by route, since they vary between eight and twelve on canyoneering, and ask about supervision ratios rather than assuming.

Groups with mixed ability

Split, do not compromise

Two guides and two routes meeting for lunch beats one route that suits nobody. Clapper Adventures and Deep Desert Expeditions both plan trips around the group rather than a fixed menu.

Photography groups

Light, not schedule

Private vehicles from $650 for up to three, or a charter, since a shared departure cannot leave at four in the morning for Mesa Arch.

Planning

What to ask when you organise it

  • Give more notice than feels necessary. Multiple vehicles means multiple guides, and Moab has a finite number of guides in May and October.
  • State the real number early. Operators plan differently for eight than for twelve, and finding out on the morning helps nobody.
  • Ask about deposits and the cancellation window for the whole group, which often differ from the individual terms.
  • Confirm minimum ages by route rather than by company. They vary from five on some park tours to twelve on longer canyons.
  • Describe the mixed ability plainly. Somebody managing a knee, a fear of heights or a recent injury changes the route recommendation more than fitness does.
  • Ask what happens if the weather turns. For a group with a fixed travel date this matters more than it does for a couple who can move to Thursday.
  • Ask whether vehicles stay together. If the group is split, a shared itinerary and a lunch stop keeps it feeling like one day.

One more thing worth saying to any operator: tell them what the day is for. A team building day, a reunion and a stag do want different things from the same eight hours, and a guide who knows which one they are running will run it better.

Common questions

Questions

What is the largest group size for a Moab tour?

Twelve is the practical ceiling for a single vehicle, on the standard Mild to Wild Arches half day. Moab In A Day cap at nine. Most hiking and canyoneering operators sit at five or six per guide. A group larger than twelve means multiple vehicles and multiple guides, which is normal and needs more notice.

Is a private tour cheaper for a large group?

Usually, past four people. Private vehicles start around $631 for up to four with roughly $140 per extra guest, so a group of eight works out around $149 each, below the $199 small group seat rate. Private hiking is priced per group, so the cost per head falls as the group grows.

Can you book a corporate group tour in Moab?

Yes. Vehicle based park tours and four wheel drive days suit corporate groups best, because they keep everybody together regardless of fitness. NAVTEC run backcountry days from $198 to $398 per person. For groups above twelve, expect multiple vehicles.

What are the minimum ages for Moab group tours?

They vary by route rather than by company. Moab Tourism Center publish five on their Arches trip. Adrift set seven on the Delicate Arch day and ten on the Needles. Canyoneering runs from eight upward, with some routes set at ten or twelve. Confirm by route when booking.

How far ahead should a group book?

Further than an individual would. Multiple vehicles means multiple guides and Moab has a finite number of them, particularly in May and October. Canyoneering should be booked first because capacity is smallest and weather cancellations are common.

Can a group split across different activities?

Yes, and for a mixed ability group it is usually the better answer. Clapper Adventures and Deep Desert Expeditions both build trips around the group rather than a fixed menu, and two guides on two routes meeting for lunch beats one route that suits nobody.
