Sunset tours, when the rock does its best work

Red rock photographs badly at noon and remarkably in the last two hours of daylight. Every guide here knows it, which is why evening departures exist and why they are the ones that sell out.

The short answer

Why evening

Sandstone is lit from the side at the start and end of the day, which brings out texture and colour that vanish under midday sun. It is also cooler, quieter and easier on anyone who struggles in heat.

Sunset tours run from $135. Departure times shift through the year because they are set relative to sunset rather than the clock, so the same tour leaves at 3pm in December and past 5pm in June.

Book these earlier

Evening departures are the ones that fill first in spring and autumn, because everybody eventually works out that the light is better. Two to four weeks ahead in April, May, September and October.

Timing

When golden hour actually falls

Moab sits far enough west in its time zone that summer evenings run late. Sunset moves by more than three hours between midwinter and midsummer, so a tour that leaves at 3pm in one season leaves after 5pm in another.

  • Midwinter brings sunset in the late afternoon and a short, cold golden hour. Trips are earlier and shorter.
  • Spring and autumn are the sweet spot. Comfortable temperatures, a long warm light and sunset at a civilised hour.
  • Midsummer pushes sunset late into the evening, which makes an evening tour the most comfortable way to be in the park at all on a hundred degree day.
  • Operators set departures relative to sunset, not to the clock. Moab Tourism Center leave about four hours before it. Check your specific date rather than assuming a time.

The practical consequence is that a sunset tour in June is a genuinely different shape of evening from one in November, and worth asking about when you book.

Position

Where you want to be as the sun drops

Not every viewpoint works at sunset. These are the ones guides aim for, and a good operator will be somewhere on this list rather than wherever the schedule left them.

  • The Windows and Turret Arch. East facing, so they catch warm light full on the face as the sun goes down behind you.
  • Delicate Arch. The classic sunset position, and busy for it. A three mile return walk, so only the longer trips include it.
  • Balanced Rock. Works because it stands clear of everything around it and holds light after the ground has gone into shadow.
  • The Fiery Furnace viewpoint. The fins glow at low sun, which is where the name comes from. Roadside, no permit needed.
  • Grand View Point and Green River Overlook in Canyonlands, where the canyon layers separate out in raking light in a way they never do at midday.
Carry a head torch

Desert twilight is shorter than people expect, and the walk back from any viewpoint takes longer in the dark. Operators carry lights, but if you are doing this on your own bring one.

For photographers

If the pictures are the point

Worth saying what a guided evening actually gives a photographer, because it is not the same as what it gives everybody else.

What a guide adds

Position and timing

  • Being at the right formation at the right minute rather than driving between them
  • Local knowledge of where the light lands in this month rather than in general
  • Somebody else handling the driving in fading light
  • Access timing on the longer trips

What to ask before booking

Specifics

  • How long you actually stop at each location
  • Whether tripods are practical given the group size
  • Whether they will wait past sunset for the afterglow, which is often the best part
  • Whether a private trip is possible, since it removes every scheduling constraint

If photography is the whole purpose of the evening, a private vehicle is worth the difference. Wild West Voyages and Moab Lux both run private evening departures, and neither has a group to move along.

Common questions

Questions

What time do Moab sunset tours depart?

It varies through the year because departures are set relative to sunset rather than to the clock. Moab Tourism Center leave about four hours before sunset. Mild to Wild run an afternoon departure at 3pm. Confirm your exact time for your date when booking.

How much does a Moab sunset tour cost?

From $114 for Mild to Wild's afternoon Arches departure and $139 for Moab In A Day's three hour sunset tour. Moab Tourism Center's sunset departure runs $149 to $159 with youth rates from $79. Private evening trips are priced per vehicle.

Is sunset the best time to visit Arches?

For photographs and for comfort, yes. Sandstone is lit from the side at the start and end of the day, which brings out texture and colour that midday sun flattens. Evening is also cooler and quieter, which matters a great deal from May to September.

Where is the best sunset spot in Arches?

Delicate Arch is the classic and the busiest, and needs a three mile return walk. The Windows and Turret Arch catch warm light on the face, Balanced Rock holds light after the ground is in shadow, and the Fiery Furnace viewpoint is where the fins glow and the name comes from.

Do I need to book a sunset tour in advance?

Evening departures fill before daytime ones, particularly in April, May, September and October. Two to four weeks ahead is sensible in those months. Midsummer and midwinter are easier at short notice.

Are sunset tours good for photography?

Yes, and a private vehicle is worth the difference if pictures are the point. Ask how long you stop at each location, whether tripods are practical for the group size, and whether they will stay past sunset for the afterglow, which is often the best light of the evening.
